Shiv Sena warns RSS

Mon, 02/01/2010 - 21:33

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has taken on the MNS and the Shiv Sena by coming out in support of north Indians in Maharashtra.

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat has asked sangh workers in Maharashtra to protect north Indians from attacks. This could be the organisation making clear its stance against any linguistic chauvinism.

Stung by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s (RSS) criticism of its anti-north Indians policy, the Shiv Sena on Monday hit back saying the RSS should “keep off the issue”.

“We do not need lessons from the RSS. It will be in their interest not to rake up the issue. Our stand on this is not new. Mumbai belongs to Marathis,” Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray asserted in Mumbai.

Sat, 01/23/2010 - 18:48

Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray celebrated his 84th birthday, and used the occasion to make it clear that he remains at the helm of the party.

“I have the remote control of politics and the remote control will continue to remain with me,” said Thackeray in an editorial in party mouthpiece Saamana.

Thackeray retired from politics five years ago, making way for son Uddhav to lead the party.

He is the first political personality in two decades to be made Punjab governor. The post was mostly held by retired generals as Punjab is a frontier state.

A vision of All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Rahul Gandhi, the Youth Congress hopes to induct members in the agegroup of 18- 35 years to bolster the party ahead of the assembly elections to be held later in the year.

Rahul wants the Youth Congress to be free of criminal elements and has entrusted the task of monitoring the elections to K. J. Rao, former adviser to the Election Commission of India.

India Elections : Voting rights to NRIs

Wed, 01/13/2010 - 17:33

India’s Government is considering a plan that would enable millions of overseas national to vote in elections.

With an estimated 30 million Indians living overseas, the Indian diaspore has been a powerful force in their homeland’s rise on the world stage.

India’s Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has finally announced that plans are afoot to enable Indians living abroad to vote in the next general elections.

The Prime Minister, who has so far done little about banishing and trashing to the dustbin the so-called Black List of Sikhs, went further and said, “In fact, I would go a step further and ask why more overseas Indians should not return home to join politics and public life as they are increasingly doing in business and academia.”

The Government hopes NRIs will be able to vote in the next general elections, slated for 2014.

Deve Gowda faced the ire of the BJP

Mon, 01/11/2010 - 19:49

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers across Karnataka hit the streets on Monday to protest Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) chief HD Deve Gowda’s use of invectives against Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa. Protesters garlanded the former prime minister’s portraits with shoes and burnt his effigies.

The political mudslinging over the NICE project plunged to an unprecedented low with former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda calling Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa and state Advocate General Ashok Harnahalli ‘bastards’ on Sunday.

Gowda’s angry outburst came when he accused the CM and the Advocate General of conniving with the Nandi Infrastructure Corridor Enterprise Ltd (NICE), which he alleged had grabbed land from farmers for the Bangalore Mysore Infrastructure Corridor (BMIC) project.

Jharkhand Elections Results : Shibu Soren has begun bargaining for power

Fri, 12/25/2009 - 16:32

Shibu Soren who emerged as the kingmaker here,Not only did the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha emerge as the single-largest party along with the BJP, it has actually improved its tally from 2005 by one seat to 18. Its vote share has shown a more impressive rise, from less than 3 per cent to 9 per cent.

Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) supremo Shibu Soren, an aspiring chief ministerial candidate, has begun bargaining for power.

Camping at his house in Bokaro, around 150 km north of state capital Ranchi, the JMM chief kept his cards close to his chest, refusing to announce which alliance he would prefer for the formation of a government in Jharkhand.

The assembly results threw up a fractured mandate on Wednesday with the JMM emerging as the joint largest party, winning 18 seats — as many as the rival Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Several political formations have emerged to stake claim for government-formation in the House of 81 members, but none are in a position to ignore the JMM.

Apart from the chief minister’s chair, Soren is reportedly demanding the deputy CM’s post for his son, Dumka legislator Hemant Soren.

Jharkhand Assembly Poll Results : JMM to play kingmaker

Thu, 12/24/2009 - 13:35

ECI has declared the Jharkhand Assembly election results 2009. These are the results of the general elections that have been held been in the state after four years. It had not been held for all these years as the state, that had been separated from Bihar in the year 2009, could not secure the number of votes that are required for a party to gain majority. As a result, the state had witnessed a lot of brokering of seats and votes of the political parties, but Jharkhand had mostly been under the rule of the Governor.

Jharkhand threw up a hung Assembly today with the Congress-JVM(P) alliance as the largest grouping with 25 seats, well short of majority, and the JMM (18) and RJD (5) all set to be kingmakers — in a House of 81, any combine will need the support of at least 41 MLAs to form a government.

Indications of a tough bargain came from JMM which said it would back anyone who would support Guruji, the name given to Soren by his supporters. “I am not going anywhere. If anybody is willing to support us, we are ready to talk,” Soren told partymen as the results came in.

It is possible that Congress and BJP will be vying to form an alliance with the JMM. Another surprising aspect is that the people have chosen to elect so many independent candidates. Some reports claim that the Congress might end up joining hands with the JMM, but that is dependent on Shibu Soren being elected the Chief Minister. Congress has already made an alliance with the Jharkhand Vikash Morcha, that has secured 8 seats in the Jharkhand Assembly elections 2009.

The BJP-JD(U) alliance, which won 36 seats in the 2005 elections, was the second largest grouping with 20 seats. In New Delhi, BJP parliamentary board spokesperson Ananth Kumar indicated that his party did not rule out the possibility of forming a government in Jharkhand.

Jharkhand Assembly Elections : BJP Takes Early Lead

Wed, 12/23/2009 - 11:39

Initial trends emerging from the counting for Jharkhand Assembly elections on Wednesday indicated an edge for the BJP in the 81-member House.

The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) was ahead in 22 seats on Wednesday while the Congress was leading in 21 constituencies as early trends of vote counting in Jharkhand indicated a hung assembly.

Counting of votes polled in the five-phased Jharkhand assembly elections began Wednesday morning amid heavy security. Trends available for 47 seats indicated that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was ahead of the Congress.

The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) was leading in eight seats and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) in six.

There are about 30,000 security forces and 5,200 officials at the 31 counting centres in the state.

Nitin Gadkari takes over as BJP President

Sun, 12/20/2009 - 16:57

Nitin Gadkari, a 52-year old businessman-turned-politician was appointed as the youngest president of India’s main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party on Saturday, marking a generational change in the party’s hierarchy.

The party on Friday began the process of passing on the baton to the younger generation. It first replaced its opposition leader in the Lok Sabha LK Advani and later, party president Rajnath Singh also decided to step down.

Gadkari was elected the party chief in a meeting of a 10-member BJP Parliamentary Board, as Singh declared him his successor, describing him as “an able, capable and skilled political activist”.

Chiranjeevi resigned from Andhra assembly

Thu, 12/17/2009 - 16:42

Praja Rajyam president Chiranjeevi on Thursday morning resigned from the state assembly and vowed to fight for a united Andhra Pradesh.

Stating that the Telangana sentiment has been exploited by political leaders at all levels, the PRP chief put the signature on his resignation letter in front of the media and said it would be forwarded to Speaker N Kiran Kumar Reddy later in the day by one of his MLAs.

Claiming that a united Andhra is in the best interests of the people of Telangana, Chiranjeevi said he would undertake an extensive tour of the Telangana region and educate the people as to why an undivided state is more beneficial to them. “I may face a lot of opposition, but I will still undertake it,” he said and vowed that his stance of an AP where social justice is ushered in will not change.

The PRP chief’s announcement triggered protests from the Telangana party workers who had assembled outside the party office at Jubilee Hills. The police had to take a few of them under preventive custody.

Chiranjeevi’s resignation will now shift the focus on the two MLAs from Telangana who are among the 18 legislators elected from that party.

While all the PRP legislators from the non-Telangana regions had already submitted their resignations to the Speaker in protest against the division of the state, PRP MLA from Balakonda Y Anil resigned from the house on Wednesday and A Maheshwar Reddy from Nirmal in Adilabad district, the remaining party MLA from the region, is likely to put in his papers later on Thursday.

Political crisis in AP over division issue

Mon, 12/14/2009 - 12:09

Andhra Assembly adjourned for 30 minutes after MLAs raised pro-united Andhra slogans. The House was adjourned after MLAs objected to sloganeering. Protests broke out outside AP Assembly after adjournment.

The political crisis in Andhra Pradesh over separate statehood for the Telangana region had deepened on Sunday with those for and against its creation hardening their attitudes.

People’s representatives from the coastal Andhra region continued their agitation against splitting the state for the third day on Sunday while politicians in Telangana began to prepare for victory rallies from Monday.

Meanwhile, with growing demands for quickly introducing a resolution for carving Telangana out of Andhra Pradesh, the state Assembly is likely to adjourn early when it re-assembles after the weekend recess. As MLAs remained polarised along regional lines, sources claimed that the option of adjourning the House is under consideration, with as many as 130 MLAs in the 294-member Assembly resigning in a bid to protest the creation of Telangana.

However, Chief Minister K Rosaiah has already said a resolution on Telangana would be moved in the Assembly only if there is consensus among all parties. But a number of MLAs claim that if a resolution is introduced it will be opposed by as many as 225 MLAs.

Kalvakuntla Chandrashekar Rao

Fri, 12/11/2009 - 16:42

Kalvakuntla Chandrashekar Rao (born 17 February 1954) frequently abbreviated KCR, is a member of the 15th Lok Sabha of India. Orginally a member of the Telugu Desam Party, he founded the Telegana Rashtra Samithi for the cause of a separate Telangana state.

Apart from being the president of TRS, he is currently a member of the 15th Lok Sabha of India and represents the Mahaboobnagar constituency of Andra Pradesh. He is also an active member of the Velama community and has served as the cabinet minister for Labour and Employment.

KCR was a member of the TDS in the 90s and was made the deputy speaker after the 1999 elctions, went against his hope for a ministerial post. He quit TDS in 2001 to start TRS. Gradually, a strong feeling of alienation that Telangana was far less developed than the rest of Andhra started sinking in. In 2004 elections, YS Rajasekhara Reddy gave his support to KCR for the cause but soon got coldfeet. This triggered resginations of TRS MLAs. Soon after this, KCR also gave up his union post.

TRS fought the 2004 general elections in alliance with Congress. It was able to win 5 MP seats. TRS was part of the UPA coalition government led by Congress until it had withdrawn its support citing the reason that UPA was not in a mood to give nod for separate Telangana state. In 2009, it fought the general elections part of the opposition coalition.

K. Chandrasekhar Rao, launched a fast-unto-death demanding separate Telangana. He ended his 11 days long fast  after Government of India promised on December 10th, 2009 to initiate the process of carving out the state of Telangana.

Centre Finally Agrees For Telangana

Thu, 12/10/2009 - 12:25

The Centre blinked over the issue of Telangana state on Wednesday night and expressed its desire to start the process of forming the new state by dividing Andhra Pradesh.

Home minister P. Chidambaram told reporters outside the Prime Minister’s house that the Andhra Pradesh assembly would soon pass a resolution seeking to create a Telangana state.

All cases against those who have been protesting would also be withdrawn, he added.

Following the announcement, Telangana Rashtra Samithi ( TRS) leader K. Chandrashekar Rao ( KCR) ended his fast past midnight on Wednesday.

Jharkhand sees 58 percent polling, two BSF personnel killed

Wed, 12/09/2009 - 11:30

The third phase of the Jharkhand assembly polls on Tuesday posted an average 58 per cent turnout, despite the killing of two paramilitary personnel and arrest of a former legislator of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha.

The two BSF personnel were killed when Maoist guerrillas opened fire in Dumka.

The third phase of polling started at 7 a.m. on a dull note but it gained momentum after about three hours. The voting time has been advanced from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. due to security reasons.

The results of the balloting will decide the fate of five former ministers, including former deputy chief minister Stephen Marandi and Hemant Soren, son of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) chief Shibu Soren.

In Dumka, a police complaint was lodged against Hemant Soren for instigating supporters to attack the Congress nominee’s office.

Security had been beefed up for the voting as half of the 11 assembly constituencies that went to the polls are considered Maoist strongholds.

Jharkhand assembly polls begins today

Wed, 11/25/2009 - 15:39

As the first phase of Assembly polls begins in Jharkhand on Wednesday, political experts say that the state would witness a keen contest but there would be no clean sweep for any party.

More than 6.5 million voters in Jharkhand, on Wednesday exercise their franchise to elect 26 MLAs in the first phase of a five-phase election. About 470 candidates are in the fray.

But, in a warning to voters, Maoist rebels blew up four schools that were to serve as polling stations or as camps for security forces. The CPI(Maoists) have called for a boycott of the elections.

The remaining four phases will be held on December 2 (14 seats), December 8 (11 seats), December 12 (14 seats) and December 18 (16 seats) and the results will be announced on December 23. The Jharkhand assembly has 81 seats.

The nine-year-old state, 54 per cent of whose population lives below the poverty line, has had six chief ministers so far.

No CM candidates in Jharkhand Poll campaign

Fri, 11/20/2009 - 13:00

Campaigning for the five-phase Jharkhand elections from November 25 is in full swing but the two main rival fronts fighting for power have not yet named their candidates for the chief minister’s post. Both Congress-Jharkhand Vikas Morcha and BJP-JD(U) have decided to take up the issue after the poll results.

There is a reason for this reticence. By projecting a candidate for the post, they run the risk of triggering intra-party feuding ahead of the polls. Since the Congress and BJP together put up a large contingent of candidates — 60 and 67 respectively — for the 81-member House, they are expected to emerge as major players in deciding the state’s next chief minister.

Within the Congress, the non-tribal name being circulated is that of Union minister of food processing Subodh Kant Sahay, who represents Ranchi in the Lok Sabha. Marandi, who is leading the campaign for the Congress-JVM across the state, is also a strong contender for the coveted post.

The BJP looks a divided house. While party president Rajnath Singh is understood to be inclined to award the post again to Munda, a tribal leader, another central leader Arun Jaitley is learnt to be backing former Union minister Yashwant Sinha, a non-tribal, for the post.
